The Importance of Being Present

At Sumter High School, we believe that every day in school counts. Consistent attendance is a key ingredient in academic success, personal growth, and preparing students for their future. That’s why we proudly support the Be Present S.C. campaign — a statewide initiative aimed at improving school attendance across South Carolina.

Recent data shows that 22.5% of South Carolina public school students are considered chronically absent — nearly 1 in 4 students. Chronic absenteeism has a serious impact on student achievement and long-term success.

The Be Present S.C. campaign, led by the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee, was launched in response to growing concerns about this issue. Its goal is to raise awareness, empower families, and create a culture where students prioritize showing up, staying engaged, and reaching their full potential.

We encourage all Sumter High students and families to make attendance a daily commitment. Let’s work together to ensure every Gamecock is present, prepared, and on the path to success.
