PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
GRADE 9
High school is a time for students to discover who they are, who they could be, and take advantage of all of the opportunities available to them.
- Learn and practice good time management skills
- Learn how to calculate your GPA, or grade point average
- Get involved in school activities
- Volunteer in the community
- Identify your strengths, skills and interests
- Take advantage of opportunities to explore various careers
- Talk to adults you know about their jobs to see what sounds interesting to you
GRADE 10
High school students often have questions like: What do I want to be? Should I go to college? What career should I choose? How do I save money on my education? What education provides the best options? Pathways help answer these questions by providing you with information, resources, and conversations to build confidence in their post-secondary choices.
- Talk to your family about what you might want to do after high school
- Take the Pre-SAT or Pre-ACT test
- Ask adults you know about their careers and the paths they took to get there
- Review your Career Interest profile to find suggested careers that match your interests and aptitudes, and complete the Career Cluster Inventory
- Learn more about careers that interest you by signing up for tours or guest speakers, and completing job shadow experiences
- Get a summer job related to your career interests
- Learn about the academic and skills requirements for careers of interest
- Explore post-secondary costs, scholarships and financial aid
GRADE 11
Pathways helps students plan their high-school years and map a path towards a fulfilling career.
- Learn how to save time and money by taking advantage of the Dual Enrollment credit opportunities available
- Consider elective courses that relate to your interests and future plans
- Consider gaining experience through mentorships or apprenticeship opportunities
- Check out career fairs and college fairs to learn more about opportunities
- Prepare to take the WIN Career Readiness Assessment
- Visit the Guidance Department and meet with military and/or college admission reps
- Connect with Career Specialist and counselors to discuss opportunities available to you
Going to the military, tech school or a 2-or 4-year college:
- Take admission tests, like ACT, SAT, ASVAB, etc.
- Research programs
- Tour schools/programs
GRADE 12
Pathways helps motivate and guide students to complete the important tasks needed for success after high school.
- Apply to the military, college, trade school, or apprenticeship of your choice
- Attend Financial Aid Night and submit your Financial Aid Application (FAFSA)
- Arrange for mentorships, internships or apprenticeships
- Request letters of recommendation (if needed)
- Create a resume noting high school accomplishments and experiences
- Work on college essays, personal statements, etc.
- Research and apply for scholarships
- Retake college entrance exams and WIN Career Readiness Assessment for higher scores
- Meet with admissions or military reps in the Guidance Department
