What is a School Improvement Council? (¿Qué es el Consejo para el Mejoramiento Escolar SC-SIC?)

In South Carolina, a School Improvement Council is an advisory council to the principal and school on issues related to school improvement. By law, every K-12 public school in South Carolina must have an SIC that is made up of parent, teacher, student (grades 9-12), and community member representatives. The principal is an ex-officio member of every SIC. An SIC may create additional ex-officio positions such as the school’s Teacher of the Year, PTA or PTO President, past SIC Chair, or a representative of the school’s Title I Advisory Committee.

En Carolina del Sur, el Consejo para el Mejoramiento Escolar SC-SIC es un organismo asesor para el director y para la escuela en asuntos relacionados al mejoramiento escolar. Por ley, toda escuela pública de Carolina del Sur con alumnos entre Kindergarten y grado 12, debe contar con un SIC que estará constituido por padres, maestros, alumnos (entre los grados 9 y 12), y miembros de la comunidad. El director es miembro de oficio de todo SIC. Un SIC puede crear otras posiciones de oficio tales como el maestro del año de la escuela, el presidente de la Asociación de Padres y Maestros (PTA por sus siglas en inglés) o el presidente de la Organización de Padres y Maestros (PTO por sus siglas en inglés), el presidente saliente del SIC, o un representante del Comité Asesor de Título I de la escuela.

What are the duties of the SIC? (¿Cuáles son las funciones de la SIC?)

Required SIC duties include:

assisting in the preparation of the five-year School Improvement Plan and annual updates;
assisting in monitoring the school’s progress under the Plan;
consulting with the school on development of the family engagement portion of the School Reading Plan as required by the Read to Succeed Act;
writing the annual SIC Report to the Parents (distributed by April 30 and posted to online SIC Member Network by June 1);
assisting the principal in writing the narrative report for the annual SC School Report Card.

Las funciones obligatorias del SIC incluyen:

colaborar en la preparación del Plan quinquenal de Mejoramiento Escolar, y sus actualizaciones anuales;
ayudar al seguimiento del progreso de la escuela bajo el Plan;
consultar con la escuela sobre la elaboración de la parte del Plan Escolar de Lectura que tiene que ver con la incorporación de las familias, como lo estipula la ley “Leer para Triunfar”;
redactar el Reporte anual del SIC para los padres de familia (distribuirlo a más tardar el 30 de abril y subirlo a la página web de la Red de Miembros de SC-SIC a más tardar el 1 de junio);
ayudar al director en la redacción del informe anual para la Libreta de calificaciones de Carolina del Sur.
